The “Watch” was a magical instrument designed by an artificer with a sense of humour. It was originally created to detect the spread of discord created by dragons so that it could be effectively contained before leading to catastrophes such as The Dragon Wars. It was very effective, and essentially lead to the eradication of dragons between the moon and the sea.
With no more dragons left to detect, the watch ticket its hands at more minor human conflict. Unable to effectively wage war against whichever house held the Watch, one of the Delta Lords ordered its destruction. Many unfamiliar with the device’s history came to assume its purpose was always to prevent fighting between the Delta Lords.
And without its ticking hands, nothing is left to forewarn us when dragons venture back, to prey upon the avarice of us all.
These hands they are holding,
holding the light.
These hands they are watching,
watching the light.
These hands are steady,
steadfast, and strong,
stopping the darkness
to keep us among the light
Paladin Hymn (a favourite of Ulfineas)

“The Watch was created in year 400, “4th century” (revised by University Chancellor Ignatius Ignoramus III who was confused about how dates work). Destroyed around 470-523 by a Delta Lord, likely Devson Dawlish of Devon due to his rapid triumph in the North over Ecklemore in December 523. His direct descendant is still on the thrown, with an eldest daughter named Devinsina.”
